The Enchanting Tay Phuong Pagoda Festival: A National Intangible Cultural Heritage Spectacle

THE HANOI TIMES — The Vibrant Tay Phuong Pagoda Festival has been recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage of Vietnam, a well-deserved honor that coincides with the 10th anniversary of its 34 statues being designated as national treasures.

This annual celebration, which spans from the new year to the 6th day of the 3rd lunar month and continues until the month’s end, is held in Hanoi’s suburban Thach That District. It’s a unique festival that blends cultural and religious activities, honoring heaven and earth with traditional Buddhist rituals and energetic folk games.

Nguyen Manh Hong, Chairman of the Thach That District People’s Committee, emphasized the festival’s significance, stating that it holds a profound historical value and plays a crucial role in preserving traditional cultural values, fostering community connections, and boosting tourism in the region.

Located just 20 km from the heart of Hanoi, Thach That boasts a rich history spanning over 600 years. Among its treasures are more than 200 cultural relics, including the renowned Tay Phuong Pagoda, also known as Sung Phuc Tu. This pagoda is famous for its unique collection of Buddha statues, with an architecture style distinctive to northern Vietnamese worship places.

The Tay Phuong Pagoda, constructed in the 16th century and restored in the 18th, stands tall after climbing 239 stone steps. It is home to exquisitely carved wooden Buddha statues, particularly the 18 Arhat statues from the 18th century, which are considered masterpieces of Vietnamese art. Local authorities are committed to promoting this heritage site to preserve its cultural significance and attract visitors, ensuring its lasting legacy on Hanoi’s tourism landscape.
