The Ancient Legacy of Lam Kinh

Hình ảnh
Lam Kinh – A Journey into Vietnam’s Historic Past Nestled in the Tho Xuan district of Thanh Hoa, Lam Kinh is a special national relic that holds within it the enigmatic tales of Vietnam’s most prosperous feudal era. Originally known as Lam Son, this area was the homeland of the revered national hero, Le Loi (1385-1433). It was here that Le Loi led the courageous Lam Son uprising against the Chinese Ming invaders from 1418 to 1428, ultimately claiming victory. In 1428, Le Loi ascended the throne as Le Thai To, marking the inception of the Later Le dynasty. Two years later, he renamed Lam Son as Lam Kinh and constructed majestic royal temples and tombs within its confines. As a testament to their respect and devotion, the kings of the Le dynasty (1428-1788) embarked on an annual pilgrimage from the Thang Long citadel to Lam Kinh to pay homage to their ancestors. Lam Kinh is a testament to the grandeur of the Le dynasty, housing the tombs of its kings, each a masterpiece of architectu...

‘The Tasty Secrets of Chinatown’s Morgue Sticky Rice’

Hình ảnh
The story of ‘Morgue Sticky Rice’ is an intriguing one, and I’m excited to share it with you. In conversation with the *Tuoi Tre* (Youth) newspaper, Luu Bao Minh, the son of the founder of this unique establishment, revealed that the name originated from its loyal customers. Minh’s parents used to sell sticky rice from a cart at the intersection of Nguyen Tri Phuong and Tran Phu Streets. Over time, they moved to their current location on Tran Phu Street, which happens to be surrounded by funeral homes, hospitals, and vendors associated with funeral rituals. The famous ‘Xôi Mặn’ (Savory Sticky Rice) shop, with its unique nickname, has become a beloved part of the local culture. Photo: Ho Lam / Tuoi Tre The sticky rice shop has been a fixture on this street for almost half a century, and its proximity to funeral homes earned it the nickname ‘Morgue Sticky Rice.’ Minh shared that the name stuck, and now everyone knows their shop by this intriguing moniker. As night falls, the...

Vietnam’s Hue City displays sculpture gifted by South Korea

The statue called ‘Greeting Man’ was presented by Namyangju governor Cho Kwang Han in 2019 in honor of the friendship and cooperation established between the two cities but it only arrived in Hue recently.  ‘Greeting Man’ is an aluminum statue of a blue, naked man bowing in a typically Asian greeting gesture. A naked figure represents no prejudice, and blue means no racial discrimination, while the statue as a whole embodies the values of meeting, honoring, admiring, reconciling, and fostering peace. Compared to the original design by 52-year-old South Korean sculptor Yoo Young-ho, the sculpture was shortened from six meters tall to two meters to meet the Hue side’s request of protecting the cityscape from a too tall object.  After prolonged discussions, administrators in Hue decided to install the statue in 3-2 Park on the south bank of the city’s iconic Huong (Perfume) River, where several buildings constructed with South Korean support are located. Vietnam is not...
