The Ancient Legacy of Lam Kinh
Lam Kinh – A Journey into Vietnam’s Historic Past
Nestled in the Tho Xuan district of Thanh Hoa, Lam Kinh is a special national relic that holds within it the enigmatic tales of Vietnam’s most prosperous feudal era. Originally known as Lam Son, this area was the homeland of the revered national hero, Le Loi (1385-1433). It was here that Le Loi led the courageous Lam Son uprising against the Chinese Ming invaders from 1418 to 1428, ultimately claiming victory.
In 1428, Le Loi ascended the throne as Le Thai To, marking the inception of the Later Le dynasty. Two years later, he renamed Lam Son as Lam Kinh and constructed majestic royal temples and tombs within its confines. As a testament to their respect and devotion, the kings of the Le dynasty (1428-1788) embarked on an annual pilgrimage from the Thang Long citadel to Lam Kinh to pay homage to their ancestors.
Lam Kinh is a testament to the grandeur of the Le dynasty, housing the tombs of its kings, each a masterpiece of architecture with unique flanking statues. Among these, the tomb of Queen Ngo Thi Ngoc Giao, mother of King Le Thanh Tong, stands out with its female statues. The site also boasts a well that served as the primary water source for Lam Kinh, offering clear water throughout the year.
