The Imperial Legacy: Vietnam’s National Treasures Unveiled

Hình ảnh
Vietnam has recently recognized four ancient artifacts as national treasures, joining the ranks of 33 other precious relics. This decision, made by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, was announced by the museum on Friday. Among these newly acknowledged treasures are the Ngo Mon bell, a stone relief crafted during the reign of King Minh Mang, King Duy Tan’s throne, and a dragon statue that dates back to the rule of King Thieu Tri. King Duy Tan’s throne, a masterpiece from the early 20th century, now stands as a national treasure of Vietnam. It dates back to 1822, during the reign of King Minh Mang, the second emperor of the Nguyen dynasty (1802-1945). Visitors can admire this artifact at Lau Ngu Phung, located within the Meridian Gate of the Hue Imperial City. This bell, originally placed in the southern gate—the largest of the four main entrances to the Hue Imperial...

“A Tribute to Aruna Vasudev: Celebrating the ‘Mother of Asian Cinema'”

Hình ảnh
This article, originally written in Vietnamese by Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan, chairwoman of the Vietnam Film Development Association, has been translated and edited by Tuoi Tre News . It pays tribute to the late Indian film critic, Aruna Vasudev, a beloved and respected figure in the global film community. The news of Aruna Vasudev’s passing in the early hours of September 6, 2023, came as a shock to many, including myself. It was hard to believe that this elegant and passionate critic, editor, author, and documentary filmmaker had left us, even though she had been frail with age and battling Alzheimer’s disease for years. Vasudev was a true champion of Asian cinema and an irreplaceable figure in the industry. With her extensive knowledge and dedication to the craft, she founded the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) in 1991, a non-profit organization that discovered and honored Asian films and filmmakers while fostering academic exchange. She served as the heart and soul of ...

Caring for a pet in Vietnam as an expat: A guide

Hình ảnh
Throughout my entire life, I have always been against having a pet. I used to frown upon and make comments about those “crazy” people who bring their dogs or cats everywhere with them. However, a few months ago, my wife surprised me with a six-week-old dog named Mun. This brought up a new question for me: how do foreigners take care of their pets in Vietnam? There is no doubt that every country has different cultural norms when it comes to pets, whether it’s in cafes, restaurants, offices, or shopping malls. But I had no idea how I would take care of a dog in an apartment in Ho Chi Minh City. My initial concern was about my apartment. Every floor of the building has a sign that says no dogs or cats allowed. However, in true Vietnamese spirit, this seems to be a rule that is not really enforced. While it’s clear that the management does not allow dogs or cats, almost every other apartment seems to have one. From what I gather, this rule is only enforced if there are complaints. Until ...

Enjoying Ho Chi Minh City in the Rain: Tips for a Perfect Rainy Day Experience

Hình ảnh
The question that is often asked is: how can one enjoy Ho Chi Minh City when they know they will have to deal with rain? Well, there is good news. The rain in Ho Chi Minh City is quite predictable during about 80 percent of the wet season. Different regions in Vietnam have different wet seasons, but in Ho Chi Minh City, you can expect an afternoon storm to roll in anytime after 2:00 pm. These storms, especially the heavy ones, usually only last for an hour or so before the skies clear up and everything returns to normal. Many locals simply plan their day around the rain. In fact, when the rain is most predictable, locals rarely take out their raincoats because they are able to stay indoors during the short periods of precipitation. However, this can also lead to major traffic congestion when everyone leaves work at the same time after the rain has passed. Commuters ride in the rain in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, May 25, 2020.
