Vietnam-RoK film exchange celebrates joint diplomatic ties

The festival was jointly organised by the UNESCO Bureau of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Cinema Department of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Korean Film Council. It coincided with President Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s State-level visit to the RoK.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador to the RoK Nguyen Vu Tung said the festival was designed to introduce a range of excellent films from the two countries to Korean audiences, as well as overseas Vietnamese residing in the RoK. In addition, the event will serve to promote exchanges in the film industry between the two sides.

Vietnamese film Anh thầy ngôi sao (Superstar teacher) produced by CJ Entertainment Vietnam in 2019, as well as cartoon Giấc mơ gỏi cuốn (Spring roll dream), which won the Lights On Women prize at the Cannes Film Festival 2022, kick-started the event.

The Cinema Department under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism selected three movies and five documentaries to be screened for free at the occasion. Some famous movies such as Em chưa 18, Jailbait, which was awarded the Golden Lotus prize for best feature film at the 20th Vietnamese Film Festival 2017 and, Cô gái đến từ hôm qua (The girl from yesterday) produced by CJ Entertainment Vietnam in 2017, were also shown to audiences.

This year marks the third time that the event has been held after the first and second editions in 2017 and 2018. The festival is expected to ramp up cooperation in culture and cinema between the two countries whilst simultaneously promoting images of Vietnamese landscapes and people around the world.

While in the RoK, Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, deputy head of the Cinema Department, held a working session with the Korean Film Council, discussing ways to develop legal corridors for film making, exchanging experiences in film management in cyberspace, and in organising events to boost cooperation between the two sides.
