Vietnam reach ASEAN football final after beating Indonesia
Vietnam will play either Malaysia or Thailand in the 2022 AFF Championship final after claiming a 2-0 win over Indonesia in their semifinal second leg in Hanoi on Monday evening.
This is the fourth time that Vietnam have qualified for the AFF Championship final.
Thanks to Nguyen Tien Linh’s double, Vietnam defeated Indonesia 2-0 after two legs as both teams had drawn 0-0 in Central Jakarta last Friday.
The Vietnamese striker put his team ahead quite early with a volley in the third minute before earning his second to double the lead with a header in the 48th minute.
Indonesia’s most noticeable remarks were their faults against the hosts that resulted in two yellow cards.
The players of Shin Tae Young, who had taken to Instagram to personally criticize three rough tackles by Vietnam’s left-back Doan Van Hau on Sunday, tried to hit back but their finishes either lacked accuracy or failed to beat Vietnamese goalkeeper Dang Van Lam.
Vietnam wrapped up a 2-0 victory on aggregate to set up the finale against the winners of the other semifinal between Malaysia and Thailand, who had played a 1-0 first leg in the Malayan Tigers’ favor in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday evening.
The Malaysia-Thailand pair is set to go head to head in a rematch on Tuesday evening.
The finale will be then held on a home-and-away basis on January 13 and 16.
