Vietnamese footballers suspended indefinitely for gambling

The VFF disciplinary committee has issued a national-match ban to five players for their misconduct during a game between Ba Ria-Vung Tau FC and SHB Da Nang FC on December 24, 2020. This match was a part of the Gold Star V. League 2, which is the second-highest tier in the Vietnam football league system, after the V.League 1.

The players who have been banned are Tran Ky Anh, Nguyen Son Hai, Le Bang Gia Huy, Nguyen Quang Huy, and Pham Van Phong.

Colonel Bui Van Thao, director of the Ba Ria-Vung Tau Department of Public Security, stated that investigators filed a request for prosecution against the players for gambling, in accordance with Article 321 of the Criminal Code, in early February. The five players were granted bail during the investigation.

In the preliminary investigation, it was found that the players placed bets on SHB Da Nang winning the game against their own club on several gambling websites. As a result, they deliberately underperformed during the match. Consequently, the Ba Ria – Vung Tau team lost 1-3 to their Da Nang rivals.
