The Capital’s Culinary Carnival: Oktoberfest Illuminates Hanoi’s Autumn Dining

Oktoberfest, a festival celebrating the very best of German cuisine, craft beer, and vibrant cultural traditions, is making its return to Vietnam this autumn. The festivities will take place in three major cities: Hanoi, Danang, and Ho Chi Minh City, from September to October.

As shared by Alexander Ziehe, Chairman of the German Business Association (GBA), this year’s event holds extra significance. The year 2025 will mark a special milestone: the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the Federal Republic of Germany. The festival, he added, is a testament to the deepened bilateral strategic partnership across various fields, especially culture, economics, trade, and investment.

Oktoberfest has been a long-standing tradition in Vietnam since 1992 and is one of the longest-running celebrations of its kind outside of Germany. It serves as a cultural bridge between the two nations, promoting German culture and strengthening the strategic partnership between Vietnam and Germany.

The festival will kick off in Hanoi from September 26 to 28, followed by a celebration in the beautiful coastal city of Da Nang on October 4. The grand finale will take place in the bustling metropolis of Ho Chi Minh City from October 10 to 12.

Beer enthusiasts will be delighted to find a variety of German beer brands, including Erdinger Stiftung Lager, Erdinger Weissebier, and Erdinger Dunkel Draught. And for those who prefer a non-alcoholic option, the festival will also offer Erdinger Weissebier Alkoholfre.

In Hanoi, the JW Marriott Hanoi Hotel will be transformed into a Bavarian wonderland. A large beer tent, ‘Festzelt’, will be set up, serving imported and locally brewed beers in signature steins. The waitstaff, dressed in traditional Bavarian attire (“Dirndl” for women and “Lederhosen” for men), will add to the authentic atmosphere. The festival will also feature a premium buffet with a mouth-watering spread of German delicacies, including ‘bratwurst’ sausages, pretzels, ‘sauerkraut’, and more.

Adding to the excitement, this year’s Oktoberfest will bring the vibrant carnival atmosphere of Bavaria to life. The renowned band O’zapft, featuring talented musicians from Germany and Austria, will take the stage. With a mix of traditional and modern instruments, their performances will blend classic Oktoberfest tunes with popular hits, creating an unforgettable musical experience.

Oktoberfest 2024 is proudly co-organized by the German Business Association, the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Vietnam, and the JW Marriott Hotel Hanoi. It receives patronage from the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Hanoi and the German Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City.

Last year’s festival was a massive success, attracting over 10,500 visitors and serving an impressive 20,000 liters of beer. With its growing popularity, Oktoberfest has established itself as the largest beer festival in Southeast Asia.

The origins of Oktoberfest can be traced back to the 1800s in the Bavarian region of Germany. It began as a celebration of the marriage of the future King Ludwig, who invited the entire town to join in the festivities. This tradition has now evolved into the world’s largest beer festival, drawing millions of visitors each year.
