The Crystal Ball: Australian Swimmer’s Golden Destiny

In a remarkable display of determination and talent, Leary shattered her own world record in the 100-meter freestyle final, finishing with a time of 59.53 seconds in the S9 category. This category includes swimmers facing significant challenges due to severe weakness in one leg.

The bubbly and inspiring 23-year-old from the Sunshine Coast has an incredible story of resilience. In 2021, she found herself in a coma, fighting for her life after a high-speed bike accident that caused permanent brain and leg injuries, a punctured lung, and multiple broken bones.

During this darkest of times, Leary’s parents were repeatedly warned by doctors that their daughter’s survival was uncertain. It was then that they turned to a clairvoyant for guidance and hope.

“While I was in the ICU, my dad consulted a fortune teller, who revealed that I aspired to compete in the Paralympics. And here I am, a world record holder and Paralympic champion,” Leary said, her voice filled with awe and gratitude.

“Oh my goodness, I actually did it!” she exclaimed, still processing the magnitude of her achievement.

Leary’s journey and positive attitude have captured the hearts of Australians nationwide, elevating her to a status comparable to that of the country’s renowned able-bodied Olympic champion swimmers, Ariarne Titmus and Kaylee McKeown.

Her parents, Russell and Belinda, watched from the stands at La Defense Arena, brimming with pride as their daughter added a second gold medal to her tally at the Games, having already excelled in the mixed medley relay.

“I owe my presence here to the unwavering support of my mum and dad,” Leary acknowledged, her voice thick with emotion.

“When I was in the brain injury ward, my dad took a leave of absence from work, and my mum did the same. They dedicated themselves to being by my side in the hospital for six incredibly challenging months.

“I will never forget the image of my dad, constantly by my bedside, his knees pressed to the floor, praying for my recovery. His eyes often shine with tears of joy and gratitude.”
