From Hanoi to Truong Sa: A Love-Filled Journey Across Land and Sea
THE HANOI CHRONICLE — Beneath the scorching sun of May, as the nation commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands’ liberation, a special delegation from Hanoi embarked on a meaningful journey dubbed ‘For Beloved Truong Sa.’

Over 120 delegates from Hanoi’s diverse sectors, including government departments, local districts, thriving enterprises, and prominent media outlets, assembled aboard the KN-491 vessel at Cam Ranh International Port. United in purpose, they ventured into the rolling waves of the Eastern Sea, carrying with them essential supplies and the heartfelt warmth that characterizes the capital.
This expedition was more than just a routine visit; it embodied the enduring bond that Hanoi has cultivated with Truong Sa and its island compatriots over 15 years of unwavering dedication and solidarity. It also served as a testament to the city’s profound connection with the valiant sailors who vigilantly guard Vietnam’s maritime frontiers.
“Not everyone is fortunate enough to set foot on Truong Sa,” reflected Le Ngoc Mai, a researcher at the East Sea Institute within the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam. “Witnessing the lives of our naval officers and partaking in the flag-raising ceremony on the island instilled within me a deeper understanding of the word ‘Fatherland’ and its profound significance.”
At each island stop – Song Tu Tay, Sinh Ton, Da Thi, Co Lin, and Truong Sa Lon – the delegation offered incense to honor fallen soldiers, paid homage at the memorial house of President Ho Chi Minh, engaged in tree-planting endeavors, shared musical performances, and presented practical gifts to the stationed units.
While material donations are undoubtedly valuable, it was the warm handshakes, kind eyes, and heartfelt words of encouragement that left the most lasting impression. These gestures transcended words and conveyed a message of love and support from the heart of the nation to those residing and serving on distant front lines.
“There are feelings that elude description,” shared Phung Phuong Thao, Party Secretary of Hang Trong Ward in Hoan Kiem District. “Truong Sa is not merely a name or a geographical location; it resides within us. It has become an integral part of our very being, a place where my heart instinctively turns.”
Adding to the significance of the trip was a charity auction of five paintings crafted by talented Hanoi artists. This auction successfully raised over VND500 million (US$19,300), channeling much-needed support to the people and soldiers of Truong Sa and the DK1 platforms.
Life on the islands presents unique challenges, including limited supplies, unforgiving weather conditions, fierce storms, and relentless sunshine. Yet, it is within these demanding circumstances that the resilience and dedication of Vietnam’s island defenders shine brightest.
Naval soldiers lead humble yet proud lives on rugged reefs and distant outposts. They are not only the protectors of the sea but also teachers, medics, mechanics, and sources of spiritual strength for the civilians and children who call these islands home.
Nguyen Thi Kim Oanh, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ba Vi District, was particularly touched by the schoolchildren she encountered on the islands. “Their youth belies a profound understanding of the importance of safeguarding our sovereignty,” she remarked. “Their dedication to education and their dreams of one day contributing to their homeland are truly inspiring. We brought gifts, but the spirit of those children was the most valuable treasure we carried back with us.”
This journey offered the Hanoi delegation a glimpse into the Navy’s silent sacrifices: sleepless nights spent on guard duty, simple meals, and moments of remembrance for fallen comrades. These experiences etched an indelible image of Truong Sa as a symbol of courage, pride, and sacred duty at the nation’s frontier.
Forging Stronger Ties Between the Rear and the Front
A memorable highlight of the trip was the inauguration of a new multipurpose community center on Truong Sa Lon Island, generously sponsored by Hanoi. This structure stands as a testament to the city’s enduring commitment to the islands, providing a gathering space that fosters community, learning, and upliftment.
“I am deeply moved by the resilience and patriotism of the Truong Sa soldiers,” shared Nguyen Thu Huong, Party Secretary of the Business Bloc of Bac Tu Liem District. “Witnessing the projects funded by Hanoi fills me with immense pride, and I am confident that our city will continue to go above and beyond to protect and empower these communities.”

Hanoi’s dedication to the islands is evident in its substantial contributions over the years. The city has invested nearly VND600 billion ($23 million) in building essential infrastructure and public service facilities, including schools, clinics, and community centers. Each project is a testament to the city’s deep respect and unwavering solidarity with the island communities.
Hoang Trong Quyet, a member of the Standing Committee of the Hanoi Party Committee and the leader of the delegation, eloquently expressed the sentiment: “We stand in awe and gratitude for those who quietly safeguard every inch of our seas and land. Each one of us on this journey feels a profound sense of responsibility to honor their sacrifices and carry forward their legacy.”
Upon their return, many delegates pledged to build bridges between Truong Sa and Hanoi, especially among the youth. The unforgettable images of the island—the crimson flags billowing under open skies, the flag-raising ceremonies amidst crashing waves, and the children’s bright smiles—will forever be etched in their memories.
Truong Sa is more than just a name on a map. It symbolizes Vietnam’s indomitable spirit and sacred sovereignty. Through this journey, the people of Hanoi have reaffirmed that their distant support is a source of strength for those guarding the nation’s maritime borders.
“As long as we remain united in love and duty,” Quyet affirmed, “Truong Sa will forever hold a place in the heart of Hanoi.”
Indeed, as the cultural heart of Vietnam, Hanoi will always reserve a special place in its soul for Truong Sa. Across the rolling waves, Truong Sa will continue to shine brightly, fueled by the unwavering faith and affection emanating from the mainland.
