Flag-raising ceremony at Ba Dinh Square: A symbol of Vietnam’s immortality
On September 2, 1945, the national flag of Vietnam was first raised in Ba Dinh Square as President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence, marking the birth of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. For the past 70 years, the national flag has proudly flown over this historic square, becoming a symbol of the country’s immortality.
Every day, at 6 am, a flag-raising ceremony is held in front of the President Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. The soldiers of Mission 275 of the President Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum’s Protection High Command march in formation to the flagpole, accompanied by the song, “Marching under the Military Flag”. The parade is led by soldiers bearing the “Determined to Win” military flag, followed by 34 soldiers representing the first cadres and soldiers of the Vietnam Propaganda Unit of the Liberation Army, established in 1944, and the predecessors of the Vietnam People’s Army.
With precision and pride, the soldiers halt at the base of the flagpole and raise the flag to the top of the 29-meter-high pole. As the sun sets, the flag-lowering ceremony commences at 9 pm. The national flag is lowered and folded with respect before the President Ho Chi Minh saluting rite.
These ceremonies hold great significance for the Vietnamese people, filling them with a sense of pride and patriotism.
