The Night Sky Illuminated: A Garden in Southern Vietnam Plays Host to Thousands of Wild Birds

An unexpected sight greeted drivers traveling along National Highway 91 in An Chau Town during the Lunar New Year holiday, or Tet. As they drove through the district, they were amazed to see countless white storks and herons soaring above and nesting in the trees of a roadside garden.

“It’s quite remarkable that despite the busy road, so many wild birds have made this garden their home,” shared Kim Tu, a local resident of An Giang Province. “Some have even nested on the tall tree branches right by the roadside.”

Huynh Van Nhut, the 75-year-old caretaker of the garden, shared with Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that the garden spans around two hectares. When he first moved to this relative’s garden 28 years ago, it was devoid of any bird life.

However, a surprising transformation took place about three years later. “It was about 25 years ago when storks started arriving and making this their nesting and breeding ground,” Nhut recalled.

Since then, the population of these wild birds has been on a steady rise. Each morning, they venture out in search of food and return in the evening, creating a daily ritual that Nhut finds enjoyable to witness. “I take great pleasure in watching their evening return, and it’s my wish to maintain a safe haven for these wild birds,” he added.

Nguyen Ky Phat, 63, who has been a guardian of the garden for over a decade, shares Nhut’s dedication to caring for and protecting these birds. According to Phat, the bird population has been increasing, with more birds settling even in the trees near the front of the property.

Despite the busy highway and surrounding residential areas, the birds have chosen this garden as their sanctuary. “It’s intriguing that they’ve selected this place,” Phat mused. “Perhaps it’s the suitability of the trees or the sense of undisturbed peace they find here that keeps bringing them back and drawing more of their kind.”
