The Dutch Need to Step Up Their Game Against an Irritated Spain, Says Koeman

The first leg of this thrilling encounter ended in a pulsating 2-2 draw in Rotterdam on Thursday, with Spain scoring a stoppage-time equalizer. Now, the European champions have the advantage of playing at home in the second leg.

“I expect another intense match,” said Koeman at a press conference on Saturday. “Both teams can learn from the first leg and will make adjustments. Spain had moments where they were under pressure, and they will surely look to improve in those areas. We also need to do better and make the most of our chances.”

Despite the challenge, Koeman believes his team has what it takes to upset the hosts and advance to the semi-finals, where they would face either Croatia or France. The Croatians currently hold a 2-0 lead going into their return leg in Paris.

“We had our opportunities in the first leg, and we need to be more clinical in the second leg,” Koeman reflected. “There are areas we need to improve, and I’m confident we will see a stronger performance tomorrow.”

The Dutch coach will have to make a tough decision regarding the left-back position, as Jorrel Hato was sent off in the first leg and is suspended. Aston Villa’s Ian Maatsen, who was called up as a late replacement, and uncapped Ajax Amsterdam center back Youri Baas are both options for the crucial role.

“It’s a difficult choice,” Koeman admitted. “Maatsen only recently joined the squad, but he’s a natural left-back. We have confidence in our players and believe we can get a positive result.”

Interestingly, a loss for the Netherlands could potentially benefit their chances of qualifying for the World Cup next year in North America. If they beat Spain and advance, they will be placed in World Cup qualifying Group E, facing tough away matches against Bulgaria and Turkey in September, with Georgia being the other team in the group.

However, if they lose on Sunday, they will be placed in Group G, with more favorable opening matches against Finland and Malta. This group also includes Poland and Lithuania, making it a five-team contest.

“While the five-team group may seem more advantageous, our focus is solely on reaching the semi-finals of the Nations League,” Koeman asserted. “We want to compete for this trophy, and that’s our primary goal.”
